FSP were recently granted Outline Planning approval for a 6 storey block of flats comprising 10 one bedroom flats and 10 two bedroom flats with a retail unit at ground floor. The essential design concept provides two blocks of flats, one to the front and one to the rear of the site separated by a landscaped courtyard. To overcome problems of overlooking and orientation the flats face Southwest to exploit sun and daylight. Bathrooms and utility areas are located on the north side. The rear block exploits the steep slope of the site to provide flats with dual aspect north facing second bedrooms at the upper levels. A primary circulation core containing lift and staircase to all flat entrance levels provides main residential access. A secondary staircase provides alternative means of escape from the rear block. Main horizontal circulation between blocks is provided by a glazed link at each residential level. This is deliberately conceived as a light, transparent, unifying structure that provides sheltered access while allowing clear penetration of daylight into the development.
