The site was originally occupied by three large town houses numbers 114, 116 & 118 and a Grade II Georgian town house number 120. Two of the buildings extended to mews cottages accessed from the rear of the site. Phase 1 of the works involved the retention of the majority of the main elevation facades with total demolition behind.  After lowering basement level a completely new 6-storey shell was erected, inside the retained walls, to produce a large expanse of uninterrupted floor space served by a new service core(s) providing three new lifts and main access stairs. Phase 2 involved the full 'Fit Out' of the shell and core building. Accommodation included 25 consulting examination suites, a spinal injury clinic and a new pathology department which included and automated blood science laboratory, a microbiology laboratory with Cat 3 Lab, immunology and PCR, human stem cell lab with cryo preservation room, a large histopathology department along with staff changing and a catering facility.

Remodelling the existing Sir Reginald Wilson Private Patients Ward in Sydney Wing of the Royal Brompton Hospital to provide upgraded bedrooms with associated reception, staff base, utility, kitchen and office facilities.  The scope of work involved the provision of 29 no. upgraded, fully serviced bedrooms including reconfiguration of the existing multi-bed HDU each with ensuite shower facilities.  Where practical ensuite facilities were designed for fully assisted or disabled use in compliance with current DDA and HTM standards.

The works within an occupied building required careful phasing to ensure the ward remained operational throughout with the minimum disruption to bed usage and consequently to the revenue stream.  Detailed consideration was required during project implementation to ensure the protection of adjacent users including both patients and staff, and to minimise disturbance from noise and dust.

HCA - The Cyberknife Centre: 79 Harley Street

Contract Value

Floyd Slaski enjoys a challenge and they don’t come much bigger than installing a state of the art compact linear accelerator together with 300 tonnes of lead shielding in the basement of a grade II listed Georgian property in Harley Street.

Working closely with the users, suppliers, other consultants and Westminster Planning the practice was able to produce a scheme that blended contemporary design with eighteenth century style.

As the cyberknife needs a three metre clear headheight with over half a metre above for shielding and 900mm below for services and foundations the rear of the building had to be excavated to a depth of over 1.5m to ensure it would fit.  The building was occupied from the ground floor upward for the duration of the works including the lengthy period for underpinning.

The design also incorporates a single stage passenger lift, a large removable rooflight to permit removal of the cyberknife in the future, consulting rooms, offices, waiting area, WCs and nurses accommodation.

The centre was opened in early 2009 as the first operational cyberknife facility in the UK.
