Building Better Heathcare Awards
Floyd Slaski Architects Ltd has been shortlisted for the Building Better Healthcare Awards 2026 in the Interior Design category for the Heather Close Lewisham Mental Health Centre.
Appointed by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM), the practice is transforming an existing building at 1 Heather Close into a community-based mental health facility providing therapeutic support, crisis prevention, and recovery services.
The design takes a person-centred approach, creating a calm, welcoming, and inclusive environment that moves away from the traditional clinical setting. Natural materials, soft earthy tones, and biophilic elements contribute to a soothing atmosphere, while sensory-friendly lighting, acoustic control, and clear wayfinding support comfort and accessibility.
Meaningful stakeholder engagement has played a central role in developing the scheme. Working closely with service users, carers, and staff, the design team has incorporated feedback on circulation, seating, quiet spaces, and access to nature. These insights have helped shape an environment that responds to the diverse needs and experiences of its users.
The resulting design places dignity, connection, and recovery at its heart, demonstrating how thoughtful interior design and meaningful engagement can contribute to more supportive mental health environments within the community.
The nomination recognises the practice’s commitment to creating inclusive, person-centred healthcare spaces that support wellbeing and recovery.
The awards ceremony will take place on 4 November 2026, bringing together professionals from across the healthcare design community to celebrate achievements in creating innovative and supportive healthcare environments.
