Lewisham Surgical Centre - Post Occupation site visit
The new Floyd Slaski Architects Ltd designed Surgical Centre opened its doors to patients in early 2026 when we were delighted to receive feedback from our Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust construction director Tristram Reynolds: "The first patients went through yesterday. All good! So many thanks for all your personal commitment to the project, for responding quickly to queries, and making it a success."
Walking around in the sunshine today, it was nice to see the lively atmosphere, daylight filled operating theatres and recovery areas, and to hear such positive feedback from the redevelopment team and clinical users.
Floyd Slaski designed the building initially working directly for the Trust, achieving planning permission - before being appointed as architect, lead designer and principal designer advisors for our P23 client John Sisk & Son Ltd. The MEP and structural engineers were Troup Bywaters + Anders and Waterman Group respectively.
The Trust previously revealed:
"Lewisham Surgical Centre will focus on what’s called 'high volume, low complexity' procedures for patients requiring Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery. ENT has one of the largest specialty waiting lists in the country – over 650,000 as of May 2024 according to NHS data – so the centre is due to be an effective measure to improve access in south east London.
Lewisham Surgical Centre:
- Will cover over 860 square metres – that’s over two and a half full-sized basketball courts!
- Sits on the foundations of the Victorian-era hospital that once stood here – it will use the same footings, low walls and undercroft.
- Is the product of a £13.5 million investment into tackling the backlog in planned ENT care."
Managing Director Hal Jones said: "Since demolition of the Victorian hospital buildings 20 years ago, the site has been teasing onlookers with its development potential, but it's a tricky, largely landlocked and irregular shaped site that has seen various abandoned schemes over the years (many designed by myself!), so it is particularly pleasing to see this much needed surgical building coming to fruition. Working with SISK was a collaborative, enjoyable and professional experience. They tackled the tight site and restricted access (via the emergency entrance) with a precision and care that resulted in no incidents, and a satisfied client"
