SLaM Heather Close Mental Health Community Hub

Floyd Slaski Architects have been appointed by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) to design the Mental Health Centre at 1 Heather Close, Lewisham. The project transforms the existing building into a welcoming, community-focused facility offering therapeutic support, crisis prevention, and recovery services.

The ground floor provides patient-facing areas including counselling and activity rooms, a crisis assessment room, group therapy spaces, and a kitchen café opening onto a secure landscaped garden. The first floor accommodates staff facilities, featuring open-plan and private offices, breakout areas, and support spaces that promote wellbeing and effective collaboration.

The design creates a safe, calm, and inclusive environment rooted in person-centred care. Natural materials, soft earthy tones, and biophilic elements establish a soothing, non-institutional atmosphere. Sensory-friendly lighting, acoustic control, and clear wayfinding enhance comfort and accessibility for all users.

Stakeholder engagement has been central to shaping the scheme. Feedback from service users, carers, and staff highlighted the importance of intuitive circulation, calming interiors, and access to nature. references for varied seating, quiet zones, and outdoor activity areas have directly informed the design. The result is a therapeutic and flexible environment that supports dignity, connection, and recovery within the community.
